JCKL Collection Development / Collection Management and Maintenance

This guide provides information on the Collection Development Policy and Collection Management/Maintenance project(s) currently underway at JCKL.

Rights for Items held in JCKL Digital

Copyright and Non-Exclusive License
Items in JCKL Digital remain the property of the copyright holder(s) and any rights held by the copyright holder (whether the author or publisher) before depositing the work in JCKL Digital remain unchanged by the non-exclusive license granted to JCKL Digital to distribute the works.

Using materials found in JCKL Digital
Linking to materials in JCKL Digital is strongly encouraged. For uses beyond Fair Use, permission from the copyright holder, as well as full attribution, will be required. Where indicated, some works may have Creative Commons licenses that specify permissions.

Adding Copyrighted Works to JCKL Digital

The requestor must hold the rights to share their work in JCKL Digital, or have received permission from the copyright holder to do so.  If it is not clear who owns the copyrights for the material, the author will need to ask permission from the editor or publisher to share the work in JCKL Digital.

At the link below you will find sample language that one may adapt to request permission to share copyrighted content in an institutional repository.

  • Sample - Requesting Permission to Share Published Work

All materials must be able to be shared openly, so that anyone in the world can read them. Materials that need to be restricted to a certain audience are not suitable for JCKL Digital.

Embargoes and Delayed Access

Where required by publisher policies, items in JCKL Digital may be embargoed for a specified period, after which they will become openly available.

UCM Theses and Final Project Reports may be deposited in JCKL Digital and may be embargoed as determined by the student when completing the Electronic Thesis / Research Paper Release (ETRP) form. Authors of theses and graduate student final reports can find information about embargoes, including how to request or renew an embargo, with the UCM Graduate Studies Office.

Creative Commons Licenses

When submitting works for deposit into JCKL Digital, you may opt to label the work with a Creative Commons license. Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding the range of creative works available for others to share and use legally through copyright licenses, known as Creative Commons licenses. These licenses enable creators/authors to inform their readers about how they can use the works without needing to obtain further permission from the author. By indicating that your work is covered under a Creative Commons license, you are granting permission for your work to be shared and reused, subject to the limitations of the selected license.

For more information about Creative Commons licenses, please visit the Creative Commons website or visit the Creative Commons Licenses page on our Open Educational Resources guide.
