Library Services for All Patrons

James C. Kirkpatrick Library offers a number of services to all patrons.

  • Computer and Internet access - guest logons for general public visitors require an ID.
  • Research assistance
  • Use of library materials within the library
  • On-campus access to subscription databases and library catalog. Alumni and public patrons need to be in the library building to access any databases licensed by JCKL.

Off campus access to library databases requires a UCM network login, which can be extended 3 semesters after last enrollment by enrolling in GRAD 5001, a zero-credit, no-fee course.  For further information, contact the Coordinator of Graduate Studies.

If access is needed after the 3 semester time period, former students must apply for off-campus access through the appropriate department chair.

MOBIUS is a consortium of academic and public libraries throughout Missouri.  Patrons can initiate borrowing requests directly through the system without the mediation of library staff.  

JCKL ILL is the library's automated interlibrary loan system. Use JCKL ILL to request all books (not available through MOBIUS), book chapters and journal articles.

  • Accessing library databases off-campus requires a UCM network login.  At retirement you may request extended network login good for three years. Renewable upon request.

MOBIUS is a consortium of academic and public libraries throughout Missouri.  Patrons can initiate borrowing requests directly through the system without the mediation of library staff.

Public Patrons (Annual Fee)

Public patrons may apply for check out privileges at the James C. Kirkpatrick Library with a small annual fee. Requirements to apply are:

  1. Must be at least 16 years old
  2. Present a valid photo ID.  A Missouri driver's license is preferred but not required.
  3. Complete a patron form with the patron’s name, contact information, and social security number. Once library staff has obtained a valid UCM ID number for the patron, the social security number will be removed from the patron’s record.
  4. Pay the annual fee of $20.00 (non-refundable). The public patron will be billed by Student Financial Services.

  • Library Computers - Library catalog computer kiosks are available on each floor of the building. For other computer-related needs, a limited number of public access computers are available in the Harmon Computer Commons. A photo ID is required to obtain a guest log-in for these computers.
  • Book check out: 4 weeks
  • Non-print materials: see Loan Period
  • Popular DVD check out
  • Access to library databases in the building only
  • Access to interlibrary loan services

Renewals:  Eligible materials may be renewed one time through “My Library Account”, by telephone (660-543-4154), or email (renewal-jckl@ucmo.edu).

Check out privileges for public patrons DO NOT include:

  • placing holds or recalling materials
  • placing requests from MOBIUS
  • checking out materials on course reserves, reference items, maps, or microform.

Overdue fines, fees, and bills may be levied to public patrons. Privileges will be blocked when a public patron's account accumulates charges of $5.00 or more and all charges must be paid before additional materials can be checked out.  When possible, charges will be sent to the Student Financial Services for collection.  The “Library Theft Law” (Mo. Rev. Stat. Sect. 570.210) may be applied.

Alumni

Alumni (graduates of the University of Central Missouri) may apply for check out privileges at the James C. Kirkpatrick Library at no charge.

Alumni need to provide the following information to acquire a library card:

  1. Present a valid photo ID such as a Driver’s License or military ID. A Missouri driver’s license is preferred but not required.
