What’s Up With the Art Down the South Hallway?

by Janette Klein on 2024-10-28T07:00:46-05:00 | 0 Comments

The south hallway features two children’s book illustrators with longstanding ties to the Children’s Literature Festival, Cheryl Harness and Brad Sneed. They are Missouri and Kansas-based artists, respectively, and have illustrated more than 60 books between them.

Cheryl Harness

Cheryl is a UCM alumna and received an art education degree in 1973. After several years of designing Hallmark greeting cards, Cheryl decided to pursue a career as a book illustrator. Her first book was Three Young Pilgrims and she has illustrated more than 40 books since then, most of them her own. She lives and works in Independence, MO and donated the artwork you see in the hallway to the Phillip A. Sadler Research Collection for Children and Young Adults.

Brad Sneed

Brad frequently presented at the Children’s Literature Festival from 2002-2018. At the end of Brad’s senior year at Kansas University, he visited New York City to show his work to picture book editors and art directors. He was fortunate to meet an editor looking for someone to illustrate a story about an exuberant grandpa. Grandpa’s Song proved to be a jumping-off point for a career in children’s book illustration. Brad also makes fine art paintings and sells beautiful bird note cards on his website.

Want to see more artwork or learn more about these two artists? Take a walk down the south hall, look around, and talk to our Special Collections Librarian, Maya Kucij.
