The year is almost over and the library has done a lot of fun things this semester. Check out some of our highlights!
Kirkpatrick Day: To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the library holds an annual Kirkpatrick Day celebration to honor the life and times of our building’s namesake, James C. Kirkpatrick, who was Missouri’s Secretary of State from 1965-1985. The event includes snacks, activities, and Kirkpatrick Office tours. We had about 50 participants from across campus this year!
Halloween Escape Room: The library Outreach Committee successfully planned and hosted a Halloween-themed escape room that drew approximately 82 participants from across campus, including both staff and student groups. This year's theme was “The Murder of Emilie Gilhorn,” which asked students to answer the question, “Who killed the librarian???” The room was fully created and operated by library staff and was a lot of fun for students. We plan on hosting another escape room next year!
Waffle Wednesday and Tuesday: Waffle Wednesday (previously called Waffle Tuesday for the Spring 25 semester) is an annual event where library staff cook free waffles for students! This event allows students to have a break while they’re diligently studying for finals. Between the Spring and Fall semesters, the library served about 230 students!
Family Study Room Grand Opening: We had the grand opening of a new study room at the library this semester! Thanks to a generous grant from UCM's Strategic Opportunity Initiative, the Family Study Room was created to provide a welcoming environment for parenting students and their families. This special room is equipped with safe and engaging toys that are designed to captivate children’s interest, allowing the parenting student to focus on academic work.
Tabling Events: We reached approximately 800 students and prospective students with our tabling events this year. From Choose UCM fairs to Get The Red Out, tabling is one of the best ways to raise library awareness!
The Children’s Literature Festival: The Special Collections department completed its annual Children’s Literature Festival on campus. The festival brought in about 3500 participants and 22 authors and illustrators, each offering multiple presentations over two and a half days to students in grades 3–10. Look out for more information about next year's festival on the CLF Website and social media!
