Zotero Connector Proxy Guide

Zotero’s browser extension (called Zotero Connector) can save proxy settings for users. In some cases when users follow links from Primo or our A-Z listing, it will automatically detect that a proxy is being used and offer to save the proxy information. In those cases the alert will look like this:

Though it’s intended to help with accessibility, this functionality can actually cause access problems, so it’s recommended that students and faculty not save these settings.

If a user asks about the alert pictured above, simply tell them to close the alert or click on “Proxy Settings” to disable the feature (see step 4 below).

If they’ve already clicked Accept or they’re having trouble accessing resources and you think it might be proxy-related, you can check their Zotero Connector proxy settings by following the steps below.

How to access Zotero Connector proxy settings in a browser

  1. Click the menu button for the respective browser (Chrome pictured)

  1. Select “Extensions” or “Add Ons”

  2. Find Zotero Connector and click “Details” or “Options”

  1. Click “Proxies” in the left sidebar (image components described below)

    1. In the text along the top of the Proxy Settings box, you’ll see a link to proxy documentation, which can be very useful (https://www.zotero.org/support/connector_preferences#proxies_preferences).

    2. Uncheck this box to disable proxy redirection entirely

    3. Uncheck this box to stop Zotero from offering to save proxy settings

    4. You can find already-configured proxies here. To remove one, simply select it and click the minus (-) button. The JCKL proxy will generally feature “cyrano.ucmo.edu” somewhere in the address as shown in the image

If you’ve adjusted these settings and are still having proxy issues, contact Kyle Constant (kconstant@ucmo.edu, 543-4153).
