Zotero 7

The citation management app Zotero recently upgraded to 7.0. The upgrade gives the app a sleeker new look and adds several new features to the product.

The most exciting new features involve the downloading and storage of sources from library databases and the internet. Previously, Zotero allowed users to download and annotate PDFs. The new Zotero adds that function to EPUBs and web page snapshots. Users can now take a picture of a webpage and use the annotation tools on the snapshot. The annotation features now allow users to highlight, underline, and select an area (such as graphs) of the source. The user can then add their own notes or tags to the annotations. Users can now add sticky notes, type text, and draw freehand directly onto the saved source.

Adding annotations is more straightforward with a pop-up box that allows users to choose to highlight or underline the selected text and then choose the color of the highlight.

Zotero will also show full citations for in-text citations in the document (if available).

For the true data manager, Zotero will now automatically rename the file of downloaded PDFs to a standard set by the user. All files will be stored on the cloud with a free Zotero account set up with your UCM email.

To create an account and download the app, go to the Zotero website. For more information about Zotero, sign up for the library’s Zotero workshop here. For alternate training options, contact Anthony Kaiser at akaiser@ucmo.edu.
