What to Expect from a Research Consultation

by Janette Klein on 2025-09-22T10:56:42-05:00 | 0 Comments

Booking a library research consultation is one of the smartest moves you can make when tackling a paper, project, or thesis. We have a subject librarian for each student at UCM that can help you with assignments in your program. Here’s what happens when you meet with a  librarian and how to get the most from the session:

Before the meeting:
Use your librarian’s Contact Form to schedule a time that works for you from the calendar options. Share a brief description of your topic or assignment. The more detail you provide—like a draft research question or a list of sources you’ve already tried—the better your librarian can prepare tailored strategies.

During the consultation:
Expect a conversation, not a lecture. We’ll start by discussing your topic, clarifying your research goals, and identifying any challenges you’ve faced. Then we’ll dive into action: exploring databases, testing search keywords, and showing you tools to refine results. You’ll learn advanced search techniques, citation tips, and ways to evaluate sources for credibility and relevance.

After the meeting:
You’ll leave with a clear research plan, a list of recommended databases or articles, and practical strategies you can use for future assignments. Your librarian will often email follow-up notes or links, so you have everything in one place.

A consultation isn’t just about finding sources—it’s about building confidence and saving time. Whether you’re stuck at the starting line or polishing a final draft, your librarian is your partner in research success.
