Unlocking the Stacks: Navigating the Library’s Print Collection

by Janette Klein on 2025-02-20T10:51:27-06:00 | 0 Comments

Stepping onto the 3rd floor of our library, you’re entering a world of knowledge organized by the Library of Congress (LC) Classification system. If you’ve ever wondered how to find books efficiently, we’ve got you covered!

As you walk in, you’ll notice LC Class A (General Works) on your right. From there, the system follows a counterclockwise order around the floor, leading you through subjects like History, Science, Literature, and beyond. Each book’s call number acts as a roadmap—so once you find one on your topic, nearby books will likely be just as useful! Helpful guides are posted throughout the stacks on the end caps. If you pick up a book and decide it’s not quite right, don’t worry about putting it back on the shelf. Please place it on one of the many carts throughout the floor for reshelving.

But that’s not all! The four alcoves on this floor offer specialized collections:

  • Curriculum Materials and Media – Perfect for education students, this alcove features textbooks, lesson plans, and instructional materials. DVDs of popular movies and CD audiobooks are also available.
  • Children & Young Adult Fiction – Arranged alphabetically by author, this collection is ideal for discovering classic and contemporary reads for younger audiences. Spine labels will start with “JE FIC”-- JE is short for juvenile.
  • Children & Young Adult Nonfiction – Unlike the rest of the floor, these books are organized using the Dewey Decimal System, making it easier to locate engaging educational content. Spine labels here will start with “JE.”

Need help? Our librarians are always ready to assist you in mastering the LC system and finding the perfect book. So, head to the 3rd floor and start exploring—your next great read is waiting!
