Did you know that Mickey Mouse was born on November 18th, 1928, during a train ride from New York to Hollywood? The brainchild of Walt Disney, Mickey made his debut in silent films such as Plane Crazy and Galloping Gaucho. But it was his appearance in Steamboat Willie that truly launched him into stardom as the world’s first synchronized sound cartoon character.
Over his remarkable 96 years, Mickey has become a cultural icon, starring in over 130 films and countless TV shows, including his very own Mickey Mouse Club. But Mickey’s influence doesn’t stop at the screen—he's made a lasting impression in literature too.
From popular comic strips that first appeared in 1930 to Little Golden Books and beyond, Mickey has enchanted and engaged readers of all ages! One of the oldest Mickey Mouse gems in our own Special Collections is The Pop-up Mickey Mouse, published in 1933 and designed by Carey C. Cloud. This early pop-up features Mickey and Minnie in 3-D format caring for displaced circus animals in a storm. Our collection also includes a 1975 book featuring some of Walt Disney’s earliest sketches of Mickey Mouse along with his backstory, as well as 42 other books starring the mouse himself.
As Mickey’s birthday quickly approaches, we invite you to celebrate with us by exploring his literary journey in our collection. Make an appointment to view the books using this form or check out some of our available books on Mickey Mouse in our 3rd floor stacks! Celebrate nearly a century of magic, stories, and adventures, all preserved right here in our library.
