Library Spaces and Places

If you’re new to the library building, it can be intimidating at first! JCKL is an impressively large building, with 3 floors the size of football fields, a glass rotunda, and endless rows of books and resources. We want you to feel right at home at the library, so here are some quick facts about where everything is at your new favorite study spot.

  1. The glass doors on either side of the glass rotunda are where you enter the library proper. The perimeter around the main entrance to the library houses campus resources like the Learning Commons, the McClure Archives and University Museum, Digital Learning and Instructional Innovation, and First Year Experience.
  2. The first floor of the library was renovated in 2023 and includes brand-new study spaces. From individual study nooks to modular booth seating and standing desk study rooms to a private student wellness space, the first floor has exciting options for a variety of study needs!
  3. The third floor is where most of the books live! The primary system for organizing the books is the Library of Congress classification, or LC. This system is different from high school and public libraries because it allows for more specificity in the items being cataloged around academic subjects. The blue poster to the right of the entrance lists each of the 21 LC categories. The collection begins on the right with A (General Works) and continues alphabetically clockwise to the next row over, all the way around the 4 shelf ranges. If you’re lost, you can always ask for help at the Information Desk!

Want to explore the inside before you make the trek to JCKL? No problem! Take a look at our 360 Virtual Library Tour and get acquainted first. Then, check our Library Hours to plan your visit. We can’t wait to see you!
