Embedding Librarians in Brightspace

by Janette Klein on 2025-10-06T09:16:38-05:00 | 0 Comments

Embedding a librarian into your course is an excellent way to offer students consistent, personalized support. This approach is particularly beneficial for online courses with a research component.

Adding a librarian to your Brightspace course can extend students’ access to research help beyond a single information literacy session.

Librarians can engage in the course to the degree the instructor prefers. Some examples of how librarians can interact with students include:

  • Hosting "virtual office hours" using the Brightspace discussion board
  • Collaborating to design assignments that foster creative thinking, encourage problem-solving, and build information literacy skills
  • Notifying students about new books or articles related to the course needs (via email or Brightspace Announcements)
  • Creating a Research Guide tailored to your course's assignments
  • Developing pre- and post-tests to evaluate students' research skills

Adding a Librarian to Your Course

The Brightspace "Librarian" role can be used to embed a JCK Librarian into your course, providing access to support student research and learning. A Librarian role has the following permissions and restrictions in Brightspace:

Permissions

Restrictions

  • Classlist - can view
  • Content - full access
  • Discussions - full access
  • Groups - can be enrolled in groups
  • Cannot access inactive courses
  • Cannot manage grades

For complete instruction on embedding a librarian into your course, visit the Embedded Librarians Research Guide. You can directly contact subject librarians for more information.
