Help Yourself

The James C. Kirkpatrick Library is excited to announce a new initiative to help students find resources covering a variety of topics both in the library collection and on campus.

The Help Yourself Campaign, originally started at the University of North Texas Libraries, includes a guide on the library website with information for students to engage in self-guided topic discovery. Many students may be intimidated or confused by the large amount of books, media, and other resources on the library’s 3rd Floor, and the brightly colored placards adorn the bookshelves to alert students to topics contained within and which call numbers to browse for more information.

Topics include mental health, veterans resources, LGBTQ+, sexual orientation and gender identity, work-life balance, sexual health and reproductive education, food and housing insecurity, and more.

Education Librarian Sara Evans developed the guide after learning about the campaign at the University of North Texas Libraries and speaking to UCM faculty librarians and other campus representatives about the need for similar student support.

“Our students are all dealing with a myriad of life circumstances that we may not recognize just by looking. This guide is a safe, private way for students to learn more about topics that directly impact their lives and well-being without fear of judgment.”

Evans partnered with Tori Wilson, Coordinator of the new campus initiative Care to Act and Suzy Latare, Manager of the Office of Health Promotion to ensure the guide was also an avenue for the new multi-level approach to supporting a culture of care at UCM. Links to Care to Act services on interpersonal violence, substance misuse, bias and discrimination, and mental well-being/suicidality are included in the Help Yourself guide along with books and media on the topics.
