CQ Researcher

CQ Researcher provides objective reports of current events. Each report generally focuses on a particular issue and includes background information, an analysis of key arguments and perspectives, a chronology of significant events, and a bibliography of additional resources for further research. In addition, photos, maps, and graphics supplement the articles. These reports are written by professional journalists and the facts are carefully checked. Opposing viewpoints are represented in a pro/con section, so all sides of an issue are represented in the story. This resource received multiple awards for the quality of its reporting, including the Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association in 2002 and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Journalistic Excellence in 1999 for a 10-part series on health care.

Finding a relevant report is easy. Reports are organized by topic as well as a pro/con section that identifies particular issues within larger topics. For example, several reports under the general heading of Adoption deal with Foster Care, Child Welfare, and Adoption Controversies. The Pro/Con question is clearly visible and clicking on that link brings you to recognized experts in the area who have different opinions on the question.

CQ Researcher contains reports dating back ten years. PDF files are available from January 1996 and color PDFs are available for reports published after January 2001. The digital archives contain its predecessor, Editorial Research Reports, which was published between 1923 and 1990. A tracker feature permits users to trace topics through the years to see how historical events shaped the world we now live in and explore how issues evolved over time.
