Updated Course Reserves Process

by Janette Klein on 2020-08-06T17:35:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

For the Fall 2020 semester, James C. Kirkpatrick Library will provide electronic reserves materials to ensure all students can access these materials easily and safely. All requests should be submitted through the Library reserves form.

With this shift from physical to electronic items on reserve, the Library will offer the following services:

  • Provide and purchase e-books, when this format is available

  • Scanning of book chapters from the library collection that faculty may place in Blackboard. If an e-book is not available, the Library will scan and provide as much as permissible from physical books, following copyright and fair use guidelines

  • Provide media through streaming services with institutional-level subscriptions, when possible

E-resources have the benefit of allowing an unlimited number of students to access these resources from anywhere at any time. If a video or musical recording cannot be found in the Library’s online media collections, please reach out to your library liaison for alternative options.

Providing electronic, rather than physical items, on reserves, reduces the risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus, which ongoing tests show can live on a book cover for one day and on the interior pages of books for up to three days

Following national guidelines, we quarantine circulated books for three days before making them available to Library users. The short and frequent check-out of books on physical reserve make this mandatory quarantining impossible.

The Library is asking faculty to submit reserve requests by August 13 to ensure that materials are available by the first day of classes. Requests received after this day will be processed in the order received and are not guaranteed to be available by the first week of classes. Purchases can take up to two to four weeks.
