The Literature Review in Science

The purpose of this guide is to explain the importance of the literature review in the sciences and some of the components that make up a quality guide.

How is a literature review different than a research paper?

With a literature review, the researcher hopes to locate, identify, examine and synthesize the findings of other researchers who have already conducted studies in the area you are interested in.  In a literature review, you do not attempt to inject your own new ideas or findings that may have occurred.

A research paper will contain a literature review, but its function is to help you put forth new ideas and contributions to the subject area found as a result of the research study.
