The Literature Review in Science

The purpose of this guide is to explain the importance of the literature review in the sciences and some of the components that make up a quality guide.

The Literature Review

The literature review is an essential component of the work done by the science and research community.  Reviewing recent and relevant literature that is published by the scientists within a certain discipline is the best way to stay up-to-date with new discoveries and keep track of updates, advances and revisions to earlier findings.  The review of literature should have a direct impact on formulating a good research question.  It can also inform you of studies that have been done previously and can even help you decide if the study or experiment you are thinking of conducting is necessary. It can also guide you to test variables of an experiment that earlier researchers hadn't explored.
