Information on ACA journals and how to locate articles at JCKL

American Counseling Association

  • Began in 1952 as the American Personnel and Guidance Association.
  • In 1983 the name changed to the American Association of Counseling and Development.
  • In 1992 the name changed to the American Counseling Association.
  • There are 20 chartered divisions within the ACA.  
  • Each division represents a specialized field within counseling.

Finding Journal Articles

 

  1. Go to the library web page.
  2. Select Journal Directory (in black box underneath white CentralSearch box as illustrated in picture below)

  1. Enter the complete name of the journal in the box adjacent to Title Begins With as illustrated below)

  1. You will receive results similar to this example:

  1. Choose the link that has the time period you need.  I chose Education Research Complete for this example, since the majority of the ACA journals are indexed in this database. When you open the link you should see something similar to this:

 

 
     
   
 
  1. At this point you can use the Search within this publication (directly above publication details) and add a search term or you can browse individual issues by clicking on the year in the right hand column.  The method you use will depend on your individual search preferences.  If you have a topic in mind Search within this publication is probably the best approach; if you need to look for a topic, browsing an individual issue may be the best approach.

  • It is a book

  • The place of publication is Alexandria, VA (where the society is located)
  • The author is again the American Counseling Association (rather than repeat the name of the association, you will often see citations say Author.  It is a common shortcut.  Using Author or repeating the name of the association would be equally correct.
